Christmas through the centuries

Four hundred years of Cork Christmases, on one walk.

You choose how long, and we shape the route around your evening. Every walk starts at The Counting House on South Main Street, or at your office if it is in the city centre, and finishes a few minutes from dinner and drinks.

Christmas Eve 1601

The night Cork heard about Kinsale

We start on South Main Street, where word of the defeat at Kinsale arrived on Christmas Eve 1601. The town lit bonfires, and the townspeople walked past them with long faces.

1775 to 1870

Nano Nagle, the Famine and a new cathedral

Nano Nagle founded the Presentation Sisters on Christmas Eve 1775. Cork lived through the Famine winter of 1846, and St Fin Barre’s held its first Christmas in 1870.

Stories for your line of work

Tell us what your company does and we bring in the stories that fit: the architects and builders behind St Fin Barre’s for an engineering team, Cork’s merchants for finance, the English Market for a food business.

A December story on the route

The night Cork burned, 11 December 1920.

A fortnight before Christmas, Crown forces set fire to the centre of Cork. Shops on St Patrick’s Street went up, and so did City Hall and the Carnegie Library.

We walk the street the fire took and show your team what stands there now. It makes a good story to carry into the Christmas party.

Cork City Hall, rebuilt after the fire and opened in 1936

Why it works for a works night

Out of the office, into the old city, on to the party.

Any evening you like

Pick the date and start time that suit your team, any evening up to 23 December. January works too if your party lands after the rush.

Tailored to your business

Tell us about your company in the form and we shape the stories around your industry and your team’s interests.

One price for the group

You pay one price for the group, whatever the final headcount on the night.

Bigger teams, same evening

More than 20 coming? We split the team into two groups and run them back to back on the same evening.

Questions

Before you book.

Which evenings can you do?

Any evening up to 23 December. Tell us the date and start time you would like and we confirm it, or offer the nearest time, within a day.

How long is the walk?

As long as suits your evening, up to three hours. Ninety minutes covers the heart of the story; a longer walk adds more stops and more time at each.

Can you tailor it to our company?

Yes. Tell us what your team does in the form and we bring in the parts of Cork’s story that connect to your industry.

What if it rains?

We walk in light rain, so wrap up. If severe weather stops the walk, you choose a new date or get a full refund.

What if more than 20 are coming?

We split the team into two groups and run them back to back on the same evening. Tell us your headcount in the form.
