Christmas in Cork: a history, and what's on this December
Cork has four centuries of dated Christmas stories: a battle lost on Christmas Eve, a city burned two weeks before Christmas, a nun's lantern. Here is the timeline, and where to find the city's Christmas programme in 2026.
Christmas in Cork, in dates
Most of these happened within a few hundred metres of South Main Street. Our guides tell them where they happened.
The Battle of Kinsale. The news reaches Cork that evening. Officials order prayers and bonfires, and the townsmen walk past them "with very sad countenances", so the writer cannot tell if they celebrate or mourn.
Elizabeth Fort →The Shandon bells ring for the first time, at the wedding of Henry Harding and Catherine Dornan.
The Shandon bells →Nano Nagle founds the Society of Charitable Instruction, later the Presentation Sisters. She had visited the sick at night with a lantern, which became the order's symbol.
Nano Nagle →Mayor Richard Dowden posts a notice against "the unmanly, absurd and probably superstitious practice of Killing Wrens at Christmas".
Two Quakers, William Harvey and Joshua Beale, leave Cork for Skibbereen while the city workhouse fills towards its 1847 death peak.
St Fin Barre's Cathedral is consecrated, unfinished. Its first Christmas follows four weeks later.
St Fin Barre's →Annie Moore sails from Queenstown on the Nevada, spends Christmas at sea and lands at Ellis Island on 1 January 1892.
Crown forces burn Patrick Street and City Hall, two weeks before Christmas, with the shops stocked for the rush. Eight big shops are rebuilt between 1924 and 1928.
Cork's rebel history →The Opera House burns during rehearsals for the Christmas panto, Sleeping Beauty.
